Bird of the week - Frigate Bird

frigate_bird.jpg
Related to pelicans, the frigatebird has a funny sac under his chin used to attract mates. Also unusual is the fact that they have such a large wingspan for their size that they aren’t able to take off from a flat surface. They don’t do much but fly and nest since they can’t swim or walk very well.

Harpy Eagle

So, how scary is this eagle? With talons longer than a grizzly bear’s and a wingspan of 7 feet, the Harpy Eagle is a very scary bird. I read that the New Guinea version of this species has been known to rob cradles!! Yikes!

Victoria Crowned Pigeon

Beautiful Bird of the week this time around is the lovely Victoria Crowned Pigeon. I’m thinking that this has got to be one of the most unusual birds around. It’s rather large (about the size of a big chicken), blue, and has red eyes. Not to mention that killer crest of feathers. Of course, it lives in New Guinea. Don’t they all?
