Refinishing a floor
Sunday, June 11th, 2006I’ve been in the new house for about a week and a half now, and after a lot of painting, moving, etc. I’ve begun thinking about getting the wood in the upstairs section of the house refinished. It’s apparently red pine which is supposed to be gorgeous when allowed to be all that it can be.
When we first saw the house, my roommate and I were disappointed that the floors upstairs were covered in carpet. Upon closer inspection it was revealed that the carpet was hiding some nasty linoleum over a layer of plywood nailed to the original pine hardwood.
We ripped up the carpet, and then we went to work on the plywood armed with our arms, a crowbar, and a thin crowbar called a “cat’s paw.” After about 3 days of hard labor we had ripped up the entire plywood coating.
Now we’re left with a pretty shabby paint-covered floor that definitely needs some repairs and hopefully will turn out well after it’s refinished. I got a quote for $2300 for three rooms, a staircase, and a hallway. If anyone knows if this is outlandish, post away!
